The Power of Peptides

In with the good.

Every now and again, I like to sit down and highlight specific product ingredients that are incredibly beneficial for certain skin types at different ages and stages. In the land of skin care product overwhelm, knowing what a few of these ingredients are can help you select the proper ones for your individual needs.

So today, let's take a look at the ingredient called peptides and why every person, skin type, and age stage should have this ingredient in their skincare regimen.

What are they:

As the image above describes, peptides are short chains of amino acids & active molecules that create protein bonds which give our cells their structure and shape.

How do they work:

Our bodies naturally contain these peptides, however, when these are included as a product ingredient and applied to our skin, it triggers the skin to believe that it's lost collagen. When the rest of the cells receive the notification "hey gang, we've got collagen down, I repeat, collagen down!", it sends the collagen boosting team into overdrive to set up more collagen in the body.

Why is collagen so important:

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and the main building block for the skin. It gives skin its youthful suppleness and is one of the key components in repairing wounded skin. Overexfoliation, certain medications, a poor home routine, using the wrong product for your skin type, picking and more all create wounds to the skin on various levels of degradation.

Who are peptides good for:

Everyone. (Every. Single. One.)
You could have acne (so you'll need to repair the collagen that the acne lesions are destroying).
You could be 80 (so you'll want to repair what has been lost over the years).
You may be in your 20's thinking "I'll use this when I'm OLD" (but why not be proactive?).
You could be in the middle years looking to maintain what you've been doing already.
Peptides are a one-size-fits-all ingredient that does no harm and only benefits the skin it touches.

Where can I find peptides:

Bioelements pH balancing Power Peptide Toner: Spritz-on tonic that saturates skin with moisture, improving its ability to absorb the key anti-aging peptides and extracts in this power-packed formula.

Bioelements Sleepwear: Sleepwear works overnight to smooth the appearance of lines and wrinkles as it dramatically improves moisture and tone. With Sleepwear's trusted "dream team" formula of calcium, retinol, peptides and cranberry seed oil, dry skin awakens replenished and energized. Collagen and elastin rewarded, firmness reclaimed. Skin looks more youthful, more rested and ready to face the day.

Bioelements Age-Activist: This all-in-one youth serum unites gold-standard age fighters at clinical levels (retinol, peptides, vitamin E + Coenzyme Q10), with the next generation of natural youth-supporters (watermelon, apple, lentil and fermented pumpkin) for instant results and long-term improvement with continued use. It's a single solution that empowers skin to resist the signs of cell aging.

In Summary

Research shows that all peptides have the ability to restore skin to a healthy state. Through these studies, learning of inherent weaknesses (packaging, water exposure, etc.) has led many ingredient manufacturing companies to produce synthetic peptides engineered to be more stable on and within the skin. Synthetic peptides can survive intact on the skin and better reach their target areas—so you’ll see pro-aging benefits!

Some peptides have demonstrated a remarkable skin-soothing effect, while others can improve the appearance of wrinkles, loss of firmness, and even help to soften the look of expression lines. Just like antioxidants, skin-soothing ingredients, and skin-replenishing ingredients, there are dozens of brilliant peptides. When all of these elements are combined in a skincare product to address multiple signs of aging, they can do amazing things! There isn't one perfect brand or type of peptide - each synthetic formulation carries with it a positive pro-aging result.
